ABSTRACT

Objective To quantitatively analyze the risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria in China and their weighting coefficients, so as to investigate the difference in the contribution of risk indicators included in the current risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China to the risk assessment of re-introduction of imported malaria. Methods Publications pertaining to the risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China that reported the risk indicators and their weighting coefficients were retrieved in PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang Data, and VIP with terms of “malaria”, “re-introduction/re-transmission/re-establishment”, “risk assessment/risk evaluation/risk prediction” from the inception of the database through 3 August 2023, and literature search was performed in Google Scholar to ensure the comprehensiveness of the retrieval. Basic characteristics of included studies were extracted using pre-designed information extraction forms by two investigators, and data pertaining to risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria were cross-checked by these two investigators. The risk indicators included in the risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China and their weighting coefficients were visualized with the Nightingale’s rose diagrams using the software R 4.2.1, and the importance of risk indictors was evaluated with the frequency of risk indicators included in the risk assessment framework and the ranking of weighting coefficients of risk indicators. In addition, the capability of risk indicators screened by different weighting methods was compared by calculating the ratio of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by different weighting methods. Results A total of 2 138 publications were retrieved, and following removal of duplications and screening, a total of 8 publications were included in the final analysis. In these 8 studies, 8 risk assessment frameworks for re-introduction of imported malaria in China and 52 risk indicators of re-introduction of imported malaria were reported, in which number of imported malaria cases (n = 8) and species of malaria vectors were more frequently included in the risk assessment frameworks (n = 8), followed by species of imported malaria parasites (n = 6) and population density of local malaria vectors (n = 6), and species of local malaria vectors (n = 6), number of imported malaria cases (n = 5) and species of imported malaria parasites had the three highest weighting coefficients (n = 4). The weighting methods included expert scoring method, combination of expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process, and combination of expert scoring method and entropy weight method in these 8 studies, and the ratios of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by the expert scoring method were 1.143 to 2.241, while the ratios of the maximum to the minimum of the weighting coefficients of the risk indicators screened by combination of the expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process were 34.970 to 162.000. Conclusions Number of imported malaria cases, species of imported malaria parasites, species of local malaria vectors and population density of local malaria vectors are core indicators in the current risk assessment framework for re-introduction of imported malaria in China. Combination of the expert scoring method and analytic hierarchy process is superior to the expert scoring method alone for weighting the risk indicators.

ABSTRACT

The Punjab urial (Ovis vignei punjabiensis) is a globally threatened wild sheep species. In Pakistan the species is legally protected and bred in captivity to release into natural habitats to reinforce wild populations. Vigilance and feeding are critical to survival, though the degree to which captive-bred animals exhibit these behaviours post-release has rarely been investigated. We monitored the daily behaviours of five adult urial after release and classifying behaviours from 0600 hrs to 1800 hrs, replicating each one-hour period twice and recording four observations of each animal per hour. At the herd level, vigilance and feeding behaviours were exhibited equally. Males and females invested equal time in feeding, males were more vigilant (p = 0.001) and more aggressive (p = 0.010), and females were more restful (p = 0.019) or engaged in grooming (p = 0.044) or locomotion (p = 0.002). Females spent more time feeding than being vigilant (p = 0.002). Males maintained high levels of vigilance throughout the day. Patterns of resting 1300 hrs to 1500 hrs and feeding in early morning and late afternoon were common for both sexes. Behaviours classified as 'other' were exhibited equally between sexes. Our results reveal positive indications of captive-bred urial balancing threat detection and energy acquisition post-release and exhibiting natural behaviours and activity patterns. We encourage assessment of survivorship to evaluate long-term effectiveness of captive breeding and release as a candidate restoration programme.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Heavy deforestation and land use conversion in Southeast Asia caused most of the mammals to face the threat of extinction due to limited availability of suitable habitats, which jeopardizes their survival throughout the region. As the demand for certain body parts of threatened mammals increases, illegal poaching activities increase, and consequently their population continuously decreases. Protecting sustainable population numbers or supporting efforts to multiply the population of threatened mammals in their own natural habitats is very challenging, almost impossible until the threats in the wild are removed. Therefore, ex-situ conservation through captive breeding is another reliable method which already been practiced for years across the world. Nevertheless, transferring and raising these mammals in breeding centers requires proper guidelines to maintain their welfare and genetic variability. In this paper, we discussed threatened mammals native to Southeast Asian countries that are currently under captive breeding programs. A multi-disciplinary overview, including: group size and social structure; health, stress and mortality studies and; enclosure design and environmental enrichment, are key components of the best management and husbandry practices. The mammalian alleles may experience evolutionary change if the populations of endangered mammals are retained in captivity after few generations, and that could lead to genetic problems. Therefore, a proper gene ‘flow’ is crucial to maintain genetic variation within and between populations. Finally, an important tool for species conservation is reintroduction of well-managed captive breeding populations into the wild. A complete health screening, selection of sites and pre-release training prior to reintroduction are crucial and need to be addressed for these mammalian populations.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to evaluate different wild fauna release processes carried out in Colombia, in which the monitoring and tracking was documented during the period from 1997 to 2015. Data collection was performed at Environmental Authorities documentation centers, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and institutions that work with wildlife, and management reports of the 33 Regional Autonomous Corporations during the years 2007-2013, as well as scientific papers published in specialized journals and proceedings of scientific events. Sixty-six case studies were identified of which 47 were releases of mammals (293 specimens), 16 releases of birds (372 specimens) and 3 releases of reptiles (7 specimens). The objective of releasing mammals was mainly the population reinforcement, while in birds and reptiles the objective was directed to conservation programs of endangered species. The releases of mammals and birds corresponded mainly to species categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as minor concern, and released reptiles in the category Critically Endangered (CE). Mammals and reptiles were mainly marked with radio transmitter, and birds were marked with rings. The most used monitoring techniques in mammals and birds were direct observation and telemetry, and telemetry in reptiles. Follow-up and monitoring times for mammals, birds and reptiles varied mainly in the range 1-30 days. According to the defined criteria in each case study, 57.4% of mammal releases, 68.7% of birds and 66.6% of reptiles were considered successful.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: In Ecuador the incidence of obesity, diabetes and other chronic health conditions -- which are partly due to changes in dietary behavior -- has been increasing, often most dramatically in smaller urban centers. The ubiquitous consumption of white rice is likely one important factor in this nutritional transition, while the consumption of traditional healthy foods such as quinoa remains generally low. In a 2013 survey we conducted, 67% of the 240 residents surveyed in the small Andean city of Riobamba reported they would prefer eating quinoa "rice" at least twice weekly instead of white rice. With the objective of encouraging more normative household consumption of quinoa in this population, in late 2015 an intervention was begun to promote consumption of quinoa rice 3 times a week among 131 adults in Riobamba. Between the baseline and the termination of the intervention four months later, no significant change in BMI was observed. However, at 2, 4 and 7 months' post-baseline, 52%, 40% and 47% of respondents, respectively, reported enjoying consumption of quinoa rice instead of white rice either "very much" or "in general," and 64%, 55% and 68% of respondents "definitely" or "very likely" planned to continue doing so. Our findings suggest a modest acceptance of this (re)introduction of a traditional and healthy food, though further and more extensive research could assess with greater precision the potential health impacts of such reported changes in dietary habits. ABSTRACT

Aim To verify the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of the 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (4-HBd)on cerebral ischemia / reperfusion in vivo and in vitro. Methods The model of focal cerebral ischemi-a / reperfusion in rats was established by the suture-oc-clusion method. After reperfusion, neurological score and cerebral infarction rate were assessed. Meanwhile, after pretreatment with 4-HBd for 24 h,the primary cultured cortical neuron cells were exposed to oxygen glucose deprivation / reoxygenation (OGD/ Rep). The survival rate, MDA, SOD, NO, Bax, Bcl-2 and caspase-3 concentrations were assessed. Results Pre-treatment with 4-HBd significantly decreased neurologi-cal score (P < 0. 05)and cerebral infarction rate (P <0. 01)in the cerebrum after MCAO/ R injury. Further-more,4-HBd significantly increased cell survival rate (P < 0. 05),decreased MDA content (P < 0. 05),in-creased SOD activity (P < 0. 05),decreased NO levels (P < 0. 05),decreased caspase-3 (P < 0. 05),in-creased Bcl-2 (P < 0. 05)but decreased Bax (P <0. 05)levels and therefore increased Bcl-2 / Bax ratio in the cerebrum after OGD/ R injury. Conclusions 4-HBd has significant protective effect on MCAO/ R rats, and the mechanism may be related to decreasing NO levels,Bax,Bcl-2,caspase-3 and reducing neuronal apoptosis.

ABSTRACT

Fifty years after narrowly missing the opportunity to eliminate malaria from Sri Lanka in the 1960s, the country has now interrupted malaria transmission and sustained this interruption for more than 12 months – no indigenous malaria cases have been reported since October 2012. This was achieved through a period overlapping with a 30-year separatist war in areas that were endemic for malaria. The challenge now, of sustaining a malaria-free country and preventing the reintroduction of malaria to Sri Lanka, is examined here in the context of rapid postwar developments in the country. Increased travel to and from the country to expand development projects, businesses and a booming tourist industry, and the influx of labour and refugees from neighbouring malarious countries combine with the continued presence of malaria vectors in formerly endemic areas, to make the country both receptive and vulnerable to the reintroduction of malaria. The absence of indigenous malaria has led to a loss of awareness among the medical profession, resulting in delayed diagnosis of malaria despite the availability of an extensive malaria diagnosis service. Highly prevalent vector-borne diseases such as dengue are competing for health-service resources. Interventions that are necessary at this critical time include sustaining a state-of-the-art surveillance and response system for malaria, and advocacy to maintain awareness among the medical profession and at high levels of government, sustained funding for the Anti-Malaria Campaign and for implementation research and technical guidance on elimination. The malaria-elimination effort should be supported by rigorous analyses to demonstrate the clear economic and health benefits of eliminating malaria, which exceed the cost of a surveillance and response system. An annual World Health Organization review of the programme may also be required.

ABSTRACT

One subadult male specimen of a reintroduced mountain lion was monitored using the radio telemetry technique. The monitoring lasted 110 days, being randomly distributed. Data of the monitoring through radiotelemetry suggested that the home range of this specimen was of approximately 26km². This sets as the smallest home range described for this species. However, the importance of this basic monitoring should be emphasized, since information of the behavior of a large feline reintroduced in its natural habitat after a period in captivity is incipient.

ABSTRACT

The author analyzes inclusion polices and practices for workers with disability within the labor market in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Disability is above all a social product, and work inclusion strategies adopted in Brazil are inadequate as they do not take into account relevant aspects of the world of labor and of the actors involved in it. In 2003, thirty five interviews were conducted with 22 workers with physical disability, six of their superiors and co-workers, and seven professionals and leaders of institutions concerned with workers disability. Specific legislation and employment statistics were analyzed, and institutions were visited, evidencing that the quota system for employment is not sufficient to ensure reasonable number of jobs for workers with disability. The author identified that inclusion strategies and practices are marked by situations that could be called inequality ironies as for example, the fact that superiors at work compel employees to treat persons with disability as normal people that disability is considered as a virtue, as it facilitates job access; that workerswith disability are used as examples of good workers and discipline, due to their ability to overcome limitations.

ABSTRACT

Starting from a historical review of occupational rehabilitation, this essay reflects on the possibilities of structuring a public policy towards a real social reinclusin of the injured and diseased workers, and not as a bureaucratic mechanism to reduce social security benefit costs. Aimed at workers with disabilities caused by traumatic accidents, the occupational rehabilitation department of the National Social Security Institute (INSS) in Brazil, which existed until the 1990s, proved to be inadequate to reintegrate workers with health problems of epidemic profile, particularly Repetitive Strain Injuries/Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (RSI/WRMD). At that time, as a consequence of a privatizing policy, these structures within INSS were dismantled and companies had to assume the reintroduction of workers. The development of an occupational rehabilitation policy requires the inclusion of occupational health as a topic in economic development policies, the deconstruction of the current thought and system geared primarily by pension costs, the real articulation of Health and Social Welfare in national and local projects, the inclusion of a distributive quality in the modernization plans, the monitoring of workers trajectory, and institutional transparency.

ABSTRACT

It has become clear that native species are incorporated naturally under the canopy of many tree plantations. This process of incorporation (facilitation) can be used as an opportunity to create successional models in restoration and species reintroduction projects. The need to incorporate basic ecological information is a critical issue in the process of ecosystem restoration. Pinus is a genus widely used in plantations worldwide. In Mexico, 199 790.4ha are planted with pine each year. Many of these plantations have been established with rehabilitation and conservation goals, and provide an opportunity for restoration through the reintroduction of native species of plants and animals. Because pine species are considered as pioneers in forest successional stages, pine plantations represent natural laboratories that can be used to test scientific hypothesis to strengthen the restoration and reintroduction programs. These plantations also represent an opportunity to apply scientific knowledge in practical field conservation and address the science-policy interface. In this essay, we presented arguments focused on the importance of plantations as areas for experimentation, given the diversity of environments in which they are found, from sea level to high altitudes, as well as the diversity in their structure and composition.

ABSTRACT

Hepatotoxicity is the alteration of liver structure and function induced by either drugs or other substances. The importance of its proper diagnosisrests on its potential severity. It is the most frequent reason by which the pharmaceutical industry withdraws its products. Tuberculosis is a pandemicinfection affecting a large proportion of the world population. Together with HIV infection it is becoming ever more frequent in Colombia. Tuberculosisposes a special challenge because itstreatment requires the administration, during long periods, of drugs with the potential of inducing liver injury. In this article some aspects of hepatotoxicity induced by antituberculosis drugs are reviewed, namely: epidemiology, risk factors, mechanisms, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
